Experience Malaysia’s Own Sky Mirror – Sasaran, Kuala Selangor

I’ve always had this dream to take many photos of myself at Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. Imagining how perfect it would be taking photos of the nearly 11,000 square kilometres landscape of bright, white salt with thin sheet of water that reflects the sky.

Then again, heading to Bolivia would cost quite a sum and not to mention, might require some proper planning. For a similar experience, I think it’s better I go somewhere closer to home – Malaysia’s own Salar de Uyuni, located at Sasaran, Kuala Selangor.

Sasaran, Kuala Selangor Sky Mirror

If you’re heading to Kuala Selangor from Kuala Lumpur, the journey would take about more than an hour by car.

The Sky Mirror is about 1.74 nautical miles off the coast of a fishing village of Jeram, Selangor. One special thing about Sasaran, Kuala Selangor’s Sky Mirror is that it only “appears” only a few days every month, during 1st and 15th of a lunar month and 4 days before and after these days. When the tide is ideal, the sand bar emerges with thin sheet of water on top to give the reflection you want.

This mysterious island is located in the middle of the Straits of Malacca Sea, but our boatman didn’t even need exact coordinate to find the location.

Since we are chasing after the ideal tide, we arrived at the fishing village in Jeram at 8 o’clock in the morning. We hopped on our speedboats at around 8.30am and after almost 30 minutes ride, we arrived at the sand bar.

It is advisable to wear striking coloured clothes or bring striking coloured props to make your photos pop-out. With the blue sky and white clouds above you, the reflection on the thin sheet of water would be symmetrical.

Tour with Sky Mirror Tour & Travel would usually take half a day so we were allowed to linger around the sand bar for almost 2 hours. We took a lot of photos, videos and did a number of silly things.

That is not all. If you’re a fan of marine agriculture, you can find baby clams scattered abundantly besides sand dollars. Mr Lim, the tour leader told us that at night, these baby clams glow light blue.

Other organisms that can be found here includes sea anemones, shore crabs, red crabs, bamboo clams, sea grapes, sea snails and variety of shells.

The half day trip includes a short tour around Pulau Angsa after the Sky Mirror Tour before heading back to the jetty at Jeram.

If you’re interested in joining the Sky Tour, here are some dates that you could consider for your trip (maximum 78 pax per trip):
