Water Sports: White Water Rafting & Tubing in Selangor

Personally, I prefer height-related sports in comparison to water-related sports although, any extreme sports is a must-try for me. The main reason I am not so into water sports is the fact that I could not swim and is fearful of being fully submerged underwater. I try to control my fear though with relaxing thoughts, calculated breaths and preparations. Like a friend once said, it’s all mind over body.

So yes, fear of being underwater does not deter me from trying out some of the extreme water sports available in Selangor such as the White Water Rafting. On the same day I did the white water rafting, I also got on the tube and had fun with the more relaxing Tubing.

One of the must-try water sports, if you’re into these extreme sports activities, will most definitely be the white water rafting. Living in Selangor myself, the closest place to go to for a dose of white water rafting will be at Kuala Kubu Bharu, Hulu Selangor. A drive from where I live in Kajang to Kuala Kubu Bharu, Hulu Selangor, would take approximately one hour.

First timers or seasoned enthusiasts will have to sign a waiver form before suiting up and getting into the water. Most companies prepare waiver forms and you must understand what you will and will not get, in the event of an accident before signing that form.

The basic gear before white water rafting activity includes life jacket and helmet. White water rafting PFD (personal floating device) or better known as life jacket, differs from the life jackets you find on ships or boats. The PFD for this sport is much lighter, often companies uses the Type V Lifevest or Type V Lifejacket because it helps you float better, even if you’re not a swimmer. Helmets worn must not be too tight or too loose either. This is to prevent your face hitting the rocks (if you’re thrown into the water) and to prevent it choking you.

In Kuala Kubu Bharu, there are five (5) rapid level. The one we tried that day was Level 1 and 2. The tide level of the river depends on the time of the month and weather (dry season or wet season).

It was a super fun experience, sitting in the tube and paddling with friends. It is another experience if you’re being thrown into the water as you go down the rapids – which happened to me.

Hence why, you need a captain in your raft. The captain will be in charge to pull you up into the raft as you float (thanks to the PFD). There is a special technique to “pull up”, which is why a proper PFD is important. I did say I cannot swim right? I was underwater for a few seconds after being thrown out of the raft but the PFD helped bring me to the surface within seconds. Just make sure not so breathe or swallow the water when you’re underwater.

Each trip must have a “Captain” and “First Helper” located in front and back of the raft, respectively.

Tubing Along The River

Tubing is a fun activity, especially when done with friends. The tubing in Kuala Kubu Bharu does not require a paddle – you just go with the flow. If the current is strong, the tubing will be faster. If not, you will have to help yourself by using your hands to push you forward.

Another thing my friends and I did was just floating. Our PFD can make us float well, even if you’re heavy. We floated from the starting point, all the way to the end point. All 7 of us held hands as we floated and made a star shape. We talked about the blue sky, the trees along the river and so many more.

Have you done white water rafting or tubing before?
