A Visit To BOH Tea Farm, Seri Cheeding

BOH Ada Ummph!

Even if you’re not a fan of tea, you would have heard that tagline at least once in your life. If you’re a Malaysian, that is.

BOH Tea Farm Seri Cheeding

The largest BOH Tea Plantation is located in the highlands of Pahang, Cameron Highlands. This plantation was founded in 1929. However, BOH Tea also owns a lowland tea farm. The BOH tea farm is smaller in size compared to Cameron Highlands located in Selangor, Seri Cheeding.

Driving towards the BOH tea farm, you will only see Palm Oil trees on both your right and left side. This palm oil plantation belongs to Sime Darby. After a while you might think you’re lost with all the similar looking trees around you but don’t worry, there’s a little signboard to show you where you need to turn to enter the Boh Tea Farm of Seri Cheeding.

Types of BOH Tea at BOH Tea Farm

Tea lovers will know that there are four types of teas available such as black tea, green tea, white tea and oolong tea. There are also flavoured tea, or “fusion” tea available in the market.

BOH Tea only sell black tea. However, it comes in different tea leaf grading. This is based on the process done onto the leaves. BOH Tea factory uses CTC (Crush, Tear, Curl) processing. Teas processed this way tend to have a more generic flavour, regardless of the quality of tea used.

At BOH Tea Farm, the CTC process method gives two end results:

  1. Broken Leaves
  2. Tea Dust

Tea leaves of broken leaves are coarser than the tea dust. You get tea dust in the final stage, after the whole and broken leaves have been sorted out. Tea dust are more popular amongst mamak restaurants because it gives a more reddish color immediately after dipping into hot water and the flavor is one dimensional in comparison to the more expensive, high quality whole leaf teas.

Tea dust taste is also quite bitter if steeped in water for too long.

BOH Tea also sell the “fusion” type tea such as Earl Grey, Lavender and Rose flavored. These flavors are exported from countries such as Germany, Great Britain and others since they are not locally produced. The flavors are then mixed with the local black tea before marketed to the public.
