The Settlement Hotel: Relaxing Stay at Historical Melaka

In early February, I went for a 3D2N trip to the state of Melaka with some friends. It had been aeons since I last been in this beautiful historic state. It was nice to see some of Melaka’s familiar historical places. But I was also surprised to see some of the new developments as well.

For my 2 nights trip to Melaka, we stayed at The Settlement Hotel. I have always loved hotels like this – quaint, chic and keeping the traditional concept along with the modern. My friends and I were there for a relaxing stay, spend the holidays doing some minimal activities together.

The Settlement Hotel Warm Welcome

We received a warm welcome from The Settlement Hotel’s own Managing Director, Billy Leong. We were provided refreshments before having some kueh and nyonya laksa after our more than 2 hours journey from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka. The kueh was great but I have to say, the nyonya laksa was so delicious, I even had a second helping.

After we were done with filling our tummy and had some chat with Billy, he brought us on a little tour of the hotel.

Story of The Settlement Hotel

Location & Architecture

The Settlement Hotel is located alongside Jalan Ujong Pasir. It is very close to the Portuguese Settlement, only 5 minutes bike ride away. Located in it’s own enclosure, The Settlement Hotel is a 4-storey building built in 1963. Billy Leong bought the building and had it refurbished and added some of his own extra touches to keep the traditional Melaka vibes as well as a little modern twist to it.

If you come here, you have got to pay attention to the little details like the tiled staircase from the ground floor to the third floor next to the Cool Room (which is also the Reception room). There is the tiles in front of the Cool Rool which is handmade in Indonesia and is 110 years old. Billy had them ship all the way to this establishment when he first bought the building.

Sultan Bed

A beautiful 350 year old Sultan Bed from Palembang greets us at the entrance of the Cool Room. Many of the art decor, furniture, paintings and wares on the Ground Floor of the hotel is from Billy’s own personal collection that he had bought from all over the world from his travels.

Rooms & Amenities

This hotel provides 45 room residence and 4 villas. Rooms are located on the upper 3 floors where each floor have 15 rooms. There are 7 different types of rooms, such as:

  1. Deluxe Room Queen (RM200++/night)
  2. Deluxe Room Twin (RM200++/night)
  3. Junior Suite King (RM350++/night)
  4. Junior Suite Twin (RM350++/night)
  5. Junior Villa (RM350++/night)
  6. Luxury Villa (RM450++/night)
  7. The Settlement Suite (RM450++/night)
Deluxe Queen Room

The room I stayed in was the Deluxe Room Queen. It had a queen-sized bed, complimentary mini bar, cute tea set, mini safety deposit box, iron and ironing board and full wifi connectivity. The bathroom is probably my favourite because of the huge terrazzo bathtub (that can fit 2 adults at one time) and the cool stone bathroom floor that gave me a relaxing cool sensation every time I step in – something I look forward to after a long tiring walk in the day.

Other Hotel Facilities

Hotel Spa & Pool

There is a hotel spa located at the back of the hotel, right next to the pool. This spa is famous for it’s Traditional Massage, an appointment is recommended to avoid disappointment because of it’s popularity.

The Settlement Hotel provides daily shuttle service every 2 hours to Jonker Street and Dataran Pahlawan for it’s guests. If you need to go somewhere nearby these two places, they will help drop you off there as well. The shuttle service is from 9am-9pm daily. You will need to make reservation with the reception first, just in case.

Have you cycled before? If you’re into sightseeing by your own, you can also rent bicycles provided by The Settlement Hotel. There are only a dozen bicycles though so if your group is more than 12 people, then somebody’s gotta sit at the back. Rental is RM25 for 2 hours.

The Settlement Hotel also has Ballroom, Meeting room, Multi-purpose room, Rooftop Garden, Dining Room and The Long Table Bar so if you want to have a meeting or a small event with your organization here, they can accommodate you. The Settlement Hotel also allows exclusive charter of the whole hotel starting from RM25,000 where you will be able to utilise all 49 rooms, suites and villas. This price is inclusive of private breakfast, lunch and dinner for a maximum of 90 people.

My CNY #SettlementStory Celebration

Lou Sang on 27 foot long teak table
With Dato Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen

Our dinner that night was truly special because we not only had Lou Sang with The Settlement Hotel’s owner and staffs, but also the VIP guest of The Settlement Hotel, which is none other than Dato Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen. Our Lou Sang was prepared on a 27-foot long teak dining table which was brought from Pahang. After some speech from Billy and Dato Sri, we squeezed together at the long table and threw our Lou Sang in the air, wishing for prosperity, happiness and a lot of “Huat Arr!”

Our dinner further extended into a live performance by one of our friends, Fahmi Esmail and lots of dancing before we adjourned to the rooftop for another session of karaoke with the other guests. We spent the hours singing, laughing, playing card Monopoly and talking late into the night.

It surely was a fun stay at The Settlement Hotel. The food prepared for us was delicious each time. I was grateful for the help I received from the reception too. They were very kind to my requests.

If you’re looking for a hotel where you can wind down but still be nearby the city and historical places where you can make a full day visit, then The Settlement Hotel would be the best choice for you.
